Lucedale, MS
Lucedale was founded in 1901 when Governor A. H. Longino affixed his hand and seal to the proclamation, which incorporated the Town of Lucedale. At that time, there were 332 inhabitants.
According to the 1970 Census, Lucedale grew to a population of 2,083. This population increase caused the Town of Lucedale to fall within the classification of “City”. On February 22, 1977, the Secretary of State, Hever Ladner signed the official order declaring the town as the “City of Lucedale.” Our community continues to grow while retaining its small town charm. The 2000 Census placed the population of Lucedale at 2,458 citizens.
The first official meeting of the Board of Aldermen was a special called meeting held on June 20, 1901. The first Ordinance adopted was to establish a permanent meeting place of the Board, which was on the lower floor of the only bank building in town at that time. Since that time, Lucedale has purchased and constructed a City Hall. All meetings are held at this location: 5126 Main Street, Lucedale, MS. Lucedale’s first Post Office was built in 1899.
When the town was incorporated in 1901, Dr. W.B. Brewton became the town’s first Mayor. Lucedale serves as the county seat and is the only municipality in George County.
Lucedale is located approximately 40 miles northwest of Mobile, 60 miles southeast of Hattiesburg, and 35 miles north of Pascagoula. The city’s central location in Southeast Mississippi with convenient access to regional airports and several metropolitan areas. Ball Fields
Lucedale offers a wide range of activities for the youth. The Milton Murrah Ball Field Complex hosts baseball, soccer and softball. The Lucedale Soccer complex is adjacent to the Milton Murrah Ball Field and features lighted soccer fields and a softball field.

The Lucedale City Park is very unique and offers fun for young and old alike. New state of the art playground equipment, tennis courts, basketball courts, a walking track, Splash Pad and many facilities for Scouting and picnics.

Education in Lucedale
About Lucedale Educational System
Located within the City is L.C. Hatcher Elementary School which serves grades K-2, L. T. Taylor Intermediate School, grades 3- 6, George County Middle School, grades 7-8. Schools located within the County with close proximity to the City are: Rocky Creek Elementary School, Agricola Elementary School, Central Elementary School, and Benndale Elementary School which all serve grades K-5.
George County High School affords an excellent educational opportunity to students. Tech prep programs, distance learning and modern sports facilities are just some of the features of the school. Students wishing to further their education can attend the George County Occupational Training Center, an extension of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Located inside the City limits, this college offers a wide variety of educational programs. Lucedale is located within 60 miles or less of four universities and three colleges. History of Lucedale
Lucedale is rich in history!
Lucedale (incorporated in 1901) is the County Seat and was formed in 1898 shortly after a railroad was built in the area. The town was named for its founder, Gregory N. Luce, who built and operated a lumber business there. Luce settled in the area in 1896, from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He founded Luce Farms and Luce Products Inc.
In 1914 to provide work for the men who had lost their jobs when Luce was forced to close the lumber mill. Luce Farms was purchased by the Farm Security Administration in 1938 and was divided into 40 acre tracts.
